Political and Economic Characteristics
The Gemeinde Mittelberg is located directly on the border to Germany and because of its geographical layout and the Walser mountain chain, it has no direct connection by road to its motherland, Austria. It is for this reason that the road for traffic and the basic economic needs come through neighbouring Germany. This means that the Gemeinde Mittelberg politically belongs to Austria and economically to Germany.
This special set of circumstances lead the Austrian-Hungarian government and the German government to create a contract in 1891 that enabled the Gemeinde Mittelberg to join onto the German customs association. Because of this German customs agreement there have been many special rules created.
