Chapel Maria Dank

The Chapel Maria Dank is located in the district Riezlern-Schwende.

To thank that the Kleinwalsertal was spared from arduous war, this mountain chapel was built in 1950. It was also the intention to create a place of worship in honor of Our Lady in memory of the apparitions that took place in Fatima in 1917 and the promise that "My Immaculate Heart will triumph". The chapel blends harmoniously into the landscape and has become a popular pilgrimage site. The interior shows a rich picture decoration, frescoes by the hand of the famous Vorarlberg artist Hubert Berchtold. From him come the stained glass. On the ship's ceiling Berchtold painted the Fatima message and on the chorus wall the Marian apparition, including the three seer children. The sculptor Herbert Albrecht created the half-relief of Our Lady. This work of art was carried by some Walser boys from Au in the Bregenzerwald over the Starzeljoch (1868m) to Riezlern. Fidelis Bentele carved the Way of the Cross. Architect and designer Willi Huber from Oberstdorf came up with a draft and a blueprint. The construction was done by local craftsmen.
