Valley & Walsers   Church   Church History

Brief church history
The Walsers are strictly catholic people who brought their faith with them from their homeland. Their biggest wish was to create their own parish, which proved to be very difficult and took many years to accomplish. During the settlement around 1300 and then a period of another 500 years, the Iller and the main river of the valley, the Breitach, leading up to the Zwerbach in Riezlern, were the diocese border. The left of the settlements (Mittelberg, Hirschegg and local parts of Riezlern) belonged to Konstanz, the right part (Riezlern) to the Diocese of Augsburg. In 1391, Mittelberg then became it's own parish, Riezlern followed in 1508 and Hirschegg, which earlier had belonged to the Mittelberg parish, became it's own independent parish in 1792.

The inhabitants of the valley, although they were like a large family, belonged for over 500 years to two different dioceses and Decans. However in the years 1820/21, this was recified when the entire valley came under the diocese Brixen.

The three catholic Parishes each have their own church. In Mittelberg it was built from 1460 to 1463, in Hirschegg 1804 to 1806 and in Riezlern 1889 to 1891. Each parish also has other smaller churches scattered around their particular areas.

The Evangelist faith brothers did not have an easy task ahead of them in the strictly catholic Walser area. Their first services were held in1925 in the hospital at that time of Dr. Backer in Riezlern Schwende and since 1933 there has been the Diasporage-meinde in Hirschegg, which was came under the duristriction of the parish gemeinde of Oberstdorf. In 1952/53, in Hirschegg, the church of the cross was built and since this time the Gemeinde Mittelberg has an Evangelist Vicar or minister resident.

The Neuapostoli church had  its assembly place in the "alten säge" in Mittelberg from the year 1934 but since 1980 they now have their own church room in Mittelberg Bödmen.
