 Valley & Walsers   History

1059

First documented mention of the valley. Emperor Heinrich IV. gives a hunting ground to bishop Heinrich of Augsburg, which covers Kleinwalsertal and the Tannberg (Lech, Warth, Schroecken)

1270

Beginning of the immigration from Oberwallis in Switzerland. It was for predominantly economic and political reasons, due to a secure existence being more difficult there, that led to the drift. Five Walliser families under guidance of Hans Wuestner climbed down from the Tannberg over the High alpine pass into the still uninhabited Breitach valley. The first houses stood in Mittelberg, in the "Gschtruess" at the foot of the Zwoelferkopf.

1302

Probably the year of construction of the first chapel in Mittelberg. Stone

at the parish church!

1423

For the first time the Walsers acquire the right to use a driving way over

Kornau to Oberstdorf. This steep way led from Riezlern across the

Westeggalpen and Amansalpe into the Allgäu.

1451

Earl Ulrich von Werdenberg-Sargans and Ritter Hans von Rechberg are

detained by the Walsers at Tannberg (Lech) because of a litigious matter.

Duke Sigismund of Tirol - from the house Habsburg - demanded the

release of his stalwarts. Since the Walser refused (only Earl Ulrich came free),

they conquered Tannberg and Mittelberg by force. Because of this

incident Kleinwalsertal now belongs to Austria.

1563

Emperor Ferdinand separates our valley from the "court Tannberg" and

forms the "court Mittelberg". Since that time the four localities are

combined into one political municipality, the "municipality Mittelberg".

1739

Development of a way from the Walserschanz to Riezlern.

1806

The Walsers lose their own jurisdiction, since they stand under

Bavarian rule until 1814.

1821

Up to this year Walsertal was divided in two Dioceses - Konstanz for

Mittalberg and Hirschegg/Augsburg for Riezlern. The Breitach formed the diocese

border. All parrishes now come under the diocesen Brixen in South Tirol,

1920 to Innsbruck and starting from 1968 to Feldkirch.

1891

The customs union with Germany creates large economic advantage. The free

goods transport of agricultural products and other important merchandise is the

basis for the upward development of the valley.

1930

Introduction of the busline from Oberstdorf to Mittelberg over the new Breitach

bridge and a better road from Riezlern to Mittelberg.

1933

The 1000 Mark barrier issued by the German empire government does not apply

to the valley. The tourism constantly rises. 1937 470,000 overnight stays are

counted.

1940

The first ski tow, the Parsennlift in Riezlern, goes into operation.

1950

The Heuberg chair lift in Hirschegg is posed.

1955

The new Kanzelwand goes into operation and opens an attractive ski and hiking

area.

1966

The Walmendingerhornbahn in Mittelberg, the second mountain

gondola, opens. The ski region "Ifen 2000" follows in the year 1972.

1980

Already, in the year 1960, the number of overnight stays increases from one

million to 1, 7 million with approx.. 12,000 guest beds. Altogether there are

30 Towing lifts, 6 Chair lifts and 2 gondolas at the tourist´s

disposal.

1982

The Walserhaus in Hirschegg opens its gates and in the subsequent years it

has worked out very well as a multi-purpose building.
