In the midst of majestic peaks, the Austrian high mountain valley lies at an altitude of 1,100 to 1,250 meters on the northern edge of the Alps.
The valley was settled by Walsers around 1270, an ethnic group who immigrated from the upper Valais (Switzerland). The dialect is still quite well preserved and differs significantly from its neighbors in Vorarlberg and Allgäu. With around 5,000 inhabitants, the valley is divided into 4 villages: Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad. The Kleinwalsertal extends over an area of 97 km². It is around 15 km long and around 6.5 km wide.
