Golden Views: 3 Fall Hikes in the Kleinwalsertal Valley

Relaxation
Autumn

01.10.2026

Fall has its own unique charm in the Kleinwalsertal. When the meadows slowly turn golden brown, the forests glow in warm shades of yellow and red, and the first mountain peaks may already be lightly dusted with snow, the mountains take on a particularly atmospheric feel.

The temperatures are also often just right for a long hike in the mountains: pleasantly cool, but no longer summery hot. The crisp autumn air offers spectacular views into the distance, and the trails become a bit quieter after the bustling summer season.

For us, this is the perfect time to be out and about. A leisurely hike, ever-changing views, the rustling of leaves under your shoes—and afterward, a long break with a hot drink in hand. And if you then immerse yourself in the soothing warmth of a sauna, your fall day in the Kleinwalsertal is truly perfect.

We’ll show you three hikes that we especially love at this time of year.

IMPORTANT FOR PLANNING YOUR TRIPS

The tours listed vary in length, elevation gain, terrain, and difficulty. Which tour is right for you always depends on your personal fitness level, experience, and skill, as well as current weather and trail conditions.

Therefore, before every hike, check the current conditions and choose a route that matches your individual skill level. Conditions in the mountains can change quickly, especially in the fall: wet conditions, slippery trails, fog, shorter days, or even wintry conditions at higher elevations can significantly alter the nature of a hike. Good preparation, appropriate gear, and a realistic assessment of your own abilities are therefore essential for any mountain adventure.

1. Grünhorn: The Ifen from a New Perspective

The Grünhorn is a real highlight for anyone who would like to see the Kleinwalsertal from a different perspective. The mountain hike leads over the Ochsenhofer Köpfe up to the 2,039-meter-high Grünhorn and combines scenic ridge crossings with impressive panoramic views.

The view of the Ifen is particularly beautiful. From this direction, the striking mountain reveals a completely different side, and its characteristic grassy ridge is especially striking. In the fall, the warm colors of the mountain meadows provide a beautiful contrast to the striking rock formations.

And the view of the surrounding mountain landscape is also well worth it: with a little luck, the Widderstein will already have donned its first white cap. Then golden autumn colors meet wintry peaks—a sight that feels especially fitting for this time of year.

The hike across the Ochsenhofer Köpfe is itself part of the experience. The perspective changes constantly, revealing new views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Hike Details:

  • Difficulty: difficult
  • Distance: approx. 9.6 km
  • Duration: approx. 5 hours
  • Elevation gain: approx. 500 m
  • Highest point: 2,039 m

2. Fellhorn Ridge: Fall colors, views from the summit, and a little guesswork about which peak is which

A hike where there’s always something new to discover: The Fellhorn Ridge winds its way across several peaks, offering ever-changing views along the way.

Especially in the fall, the landscape here shows off its most colorful side. The mountain meadows take on new shades of green, the forests glow in shades of yellow and red, and the clear air often makes the surrounding peaks appear particularly distinct.

This also makes the hike a bit of a challenge along the way: How many peaks can you spot along the route? The view stretches far beyond the mountains and constantly reveals new perspectives.

So: Keep your eyes open, count the peaks, and be sure to stop and take it all in every now and then. Because especially in the fall, it’s worth looking not just at the path ahead of you, but also out into the distance every now and then.

Hike Details:

  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Distance: approx. 8.2 km
  • Duration: approx. 4 hours
  • Elevation gain: approx. 288 m
  • Highest point: 2,036 m

3. Upper High Trail: Autumn's Play of Colors from Above

You don’t always have to go high up to get a special view of the Kleinwalsertal in the fall. The Obere Höhenweg takes you along scenic trails above the valley, offering beautiful panoramic views at every turn.

What makes it special: You can observe the play of fall colors from a bird’s-eye view. As the valley floor stretches out below you, the various hues sweep across the landscape. From above, the forests, meadows, and surrounding mountains come together to create a truly unique fall panorama.

The views themselves also make this trail a wonderful autumn companion. From the Kanzelwand through the Wildental to the Gemsteltal, new vistas open up time and again.

And because the Upper High Trail doesn’t just lead from one peak to the next, you’ll have time along the way to let the landscape truly sink in. A bench with a view? Perfect for a short break. A particularly beautiful autumn moment? Even better for a quick photo stop.

Because that’s exactly why we love fall in the mountains: not to reach our destination as quickly as possible, but to pause and take it all in along the way.

Tour details:

  • Difficulty: moderate
  • Distance: approx. 5 km
  • Duration: approx. 2 hours
  • Elevation gain: approx. 76 m
  • Highest point: 1,444 m

Autumn days, just the way we love them

Three hikes, three very different perspectives on the Kleinwalsertal—and yet they have one thing in common: in the fall, they reveal the mountain world from a particularly atmospheric angle.

When the temperatures are pleasantly crisp, the sun is low in the sky, and the landscape glows with warm colors, a mountain hike feels even more special. Maybe it’s the crisp air. Maybe it’s the tranquility that settles in after summer. Or perhaps it’s the fact that, after a hike, you look forward to that cozy warmth all the more.

Because for us, fall in the mountains isn’t just about being outdoors. It’s also about what comes afterward.

A long break. A hot cup of tea, coffee, or another favorite warming treat. Warm hands. Tired legs. And afterward, perhaps a few relaxing hours in the sauna.

It’s precisely this blend of exercise, mountain air, enjoyment, and coziness that makes fall in the Kleinwalsertal so special to us.
