Parish Church My Beloved Lady of Jerusalem - Services
The parish church Maria Opferung is located directly in the center of Riezlern, Alte Schwendestraße 1. You can find the contact details of the parish association here.
The year 1471, visible in the church's vestibule, recalls the first chapel. In the year 1493, a church built in Gothic style was consecrated, and a cemetery was established. Riezlern was parish-wise part of Oberstdorf and thus within the Diocese of Augsburg, while Mittelberg and Hirschegg were located in the area of the Diocese of Constance.
The Breitach, the main river of the valley, was considered the official diocesan boundary until 1816. In the year 1508, the elevation of Riezlern to parish status took place, bringing many reliefs to the faithful. Johannes Vogler was appointed as the first pastor. Significant structural changes occurred in 1684 and 1720. The church was extended and baroque elements were added. The baroque high altar, which was installed at that time and bears the year 1706, was moved to the almshouse in Mittelberg in 1841 and now stands in the local parish church. The tower was raised in 1844, and the gable roof was replaced with a dome construction.
In the year 1889, the dilapidated church along with its tower was demolished, and a new one was built in neo-Romanesque style. The reburial also took place in the new cemetery. Martin von Feuerstein, the renowned professor from Munich, created the magnificent paintings in casein technique with his master class in 1903/1904. They are among the most beautiful in southern Germany, which is why the church could truly be called a Feuerstein Museum. The baptismal font with Gothic ornaments bears the year 1608. In their hometown Riezlern, Josef Senn (1962) and Jodok Müller (1989) celebrated their first masses.
