COME PREPARED How to book your pet-friendly accommodation
Before booking – the most important information at a glance
- Check in advance whether dogs are allowed: Dogs are not permitted in every accommodation or every room. Some properties also offer allergy-friendly rooms where pets are not allowed. Please pay attention to the host’s instructions when booking.
- Mention your dog in the message field: If there isn’t a specific field for your dog during the booking process, use the “Your Message” field to inform your host.
- More than one dog? Please inquire directly: Some properties have a maximum number of pets per stay. If you’d like to bring multiple dogs, please contact the property directly before booking.
- Questions? Ask the host directly: If you have any questions about room amenities, dog fees, or house rules, feel free to contact your host directly—that way, we can work together to find the right accommodation for you.
“Pet-friendly” accommodations
The following accommodations warmly welcome your four-legged friends!
Vacation with your dog Important Information
Traveling by bus and cable car
Muzzle Requirement: On Walser bus lines 1–5, as well as on the Nebelhorn, Fellhorn, and Walmendingerhorn cable cars, dogs of all sizes are required to wear muzzles.
You can obtain suitable muzzles in various sizes:
- at the Citizen Services office in the Mittelberg municipal office in Riezlern
- at Kleinwalsertal Tourism at the Walserhaus in Hirschegg
- at Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal Mountain Railways
It’s best to bring your dog along for a “fitting” so that the right size can be found.
Mountain Railway Ticket: Your dog needs its own ticket to ride the Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal Mountain Railways. You can purchase this directly at the mountain railway ticket offices. You can find the current rates on the Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal Mountain Railways website.
Leash Requirements & Behavior in Nature
There is generally no mandatory leash law in the Kleinwalsertal. However, the following applies: Every dog should be handled in such a way that it can be recalled at any time or stays reliably close to its owner.
Out of consideration for children and other hikers, we ask that you either keep dogs on a leash or have them walk close at your side on heavily frequented hiking trails.
The law stipulates:
„It is prohibited to let dogs run free in publicly accessible recreational areas, parks, and green spaces, as well as on agricultural and forestry land and in nature reserves."
In particularly sensitive areas such as the Burmiweg, we appeal to the sense of responsibility of all dog owners and expressly ask that dogs be kept on a leash there.
In pastures – encounters with cows:
Mother cows instinctively protect their calves. As soon as your dog picks up the scent of game or livestock, its hunting instinct may be triggered. Therefore, keep a generous distance from herds and always keep your dog on a short leash and close to your body when crossing pastures.
In an emergency – if you are attacked:
Immediately take your dog off the leash and get yourself to safety. Your dog can best protect itself by running away.
Dogs on the List & Special Regulations
In Vorarlberg—and therefore also in the Kleinwalsertal—you must obtain a permit to own a listed or dangerous dog.
Please check with the municipality of Mittelberg before your arrival to find out whether your dog’s breed is affected by this requirement and what regulations apply to your stay.
Robidog Stations & Poop Bags
In the Kleinwalsertal, you’ll find over 50 convenient Robidog stations that make it easier to be out and about with your dog. These stations provide free poop bags and disposal bins—so our natural environment stays clean.
You can find an overview of all Robidog stations in our dog flyer.
Do you need larger quantities of poop bags—for example, for a hiking group or a longer stay? You can get them directly from:
- Kleinwalsertal Tourism at the Walserhaus in Hirschegg
- Mittelberg Municipality in Riezlern
